Whether you preference is for downhill, snowboard or Nordic (cross country), the Central Aroostook Area of northern Maine has it all. From the County gem called Big Rock in Mars Hill for all three types of skiing to city and town groomed cross country in lovely surroundings, a ski vacation to the area will bring much winter joy.

Aroostook State Park – Maine’s first state park offers year-round trails with excellent cross country skiing in the winter. Great views, a warming hut, and a lakeside trail add to the experience. Located two miles south of Presque Isle, Maine and off of Rte. 1, follow the signs on Spragueville Road. (207) 768-8341

Aroostook Ski Touring Center – A beautiful drive on Rte. 11 brings you to Ashland, Maine. There, the Touring Center has 10k of classic trails in a double figure eight. And the trails are in the protective cover of the woods so wind is not a factor. There is a nice warming lodge with a fireplace, tables, a library and historic photos. The trails are at the end of the Wrightville Road.

Caribou High School Ski Center – These wonderful trails are lighted for night skiing and they make snow so you never have to wonder. A lodge is available for warming up and waxing. (207) 492-2771. The high school is on Sweden Street in Caribou, Maine.

Caribou Ski Trails – Easy rolling terrain, the trails are out of the wind, winding through the woods. They are located next to the Caribou Country Club on Rte. 161, three miles north of downtown in Caribou, Maine. (207) 493-4224.

New Sweden Ski Trails – You would expect to find ski trails at the center of Swedish culture in Maine! There are two, fun, winding loop trails, one for skating and one for classic. The trails are located behind and next to the elementary school in New Sweden, Maine. Turn west off of Rte. 161 for a little more than a mile on Station Road. (207) 896-5541

Nordic Lakers Cross Country Club Island Trail – This 10k trail has two classic tracks set side by side for great skiing. The Ski Shed is available. Donations are requested to help with maintaining the trail. Located at Madawaska Lake Road at Madawaska Lake, Maine.

Snowy Mountain Trails – Meticulously groomed figure eight loops and a fun ski park are in store for you at Stockholm, Maine! Lights are being installed on some of the trails. A mixture of trees make the trails very enjoyable. Located on School Street in Stockholm, Maine.

Westmanland Ski Trails – One of the most beautiful areas in Aroostook County with views of the mountains to the west and the lakes to the north, this is the most extensive trail system in the County. There are more than 35k of trails! Take Westmanland Road and head west and then north on Westmanland Road. The parking lot is at the town office.

Woodland Community Ski Trail – Located south of Woodland Community School, the well-maintained multi-purpose trail is for both classical and freestyle skiing, and provides excellent opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors. There is a fun ski park and a downhill section.

Salmon Brook Lake Trails. Located in Perham, Maine, Multi-use trails in the Salmon Brook Lake Ecologic Reserve bring rich recreational and ecological experience. Along the length of the non-motorized recreational trail visitors are surrounded by ecological diversities while enjoying scenic wetlands and Salmon Brook Lake beautifies. The Nordic Heritage Center – The premier Nordic skiing facility in Maine and the home of World Cup Biathlon events. Located at 450 Fort Fairfield Road in Presque Isle, Maine (207) 762-6972.

Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge – Over five miles of trails groomed in winter for snowshoeing and skiing that begin at the wildlife refuge visitor center. Trails are well maintained and provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Located at 97 Refuge Road in Limestone, Maine. (207) 328-4634
